Jackson Square, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful city squares in the United States. The design was modeled after the famous Place des Vosges in Paris, France, and was designed by architect and landscaper Louis H. Pilié. Originally known in the 18th Century as Place d'Armes, it served as the city center and financial district. Merchant ships would stop off at the base of the Mississippi River and bring their cargo into the square to trade with local residents. Shopkeepers relied on the vessels to supply the town with a variety of goods, such as: whiskey, tobacco, exotic foods, and spices.
In 1814, Place d'Armes was renamed to Jackson Square in honor of General Andrew Jackson after the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson heroically saved the city from a British naval invasion which ultimately resulted in a peace treaty between England and the United States.
